
Built in 1861 by Richard Wakelin, publisher of the Wairarapa’s first newspaper, Rose Cottage is one of the region’s most endearing historic homes. Malcolm Somerville, author of Cottages of New Zealand, described Rose Cottage as, “almost too perfect”. He warmly praised the “gourmet kitchen” and the “traditional gardens designed to provide strong texture and colour” (Hodder Moa Beckett, 2000).
