“Almost too perfect …”

Built in 1861 by Richard Wakelin, publisher of the Wairarapa’s first newspaper, Rose Cottage is one of the region’s most endearing historic homes.   Malcolm Somerville, author of Cottages of New Zealand, described Rose Cottage as, “almost too perfect”. He warmly praised the “gourmet kitchen” and the “traditional gardens designed to provide strong texture and colour” (Hodder Moa Beckett, 2000).

“Any great hotel experiences? Yeah, we stayed at a lovely cottage called the Rose Cottage. It’s a little country house in between Martinborough and Greytown. It’s very inexpensive, not more than a few hundred dollars for the house. I will probably go back again at some point….” (AmericanWay magazine March 2005. Unfortunately every time Adrien has wanted to stay since - we’ve been booked out!)
